The scimitar oryx is adapted to living in the arid areas where it can survive for 9-10 months without water, thanks to kidneys that prevent the loss of water through urination, and the ability to adjust its body temperature – able to reach 46.5 ° C – to avoid sweating. Herds of males and females reach about 70. Births occur mainly in March and October, and the female is separated from the herd for a few hours while she gives birth. The young oryx is weaned from its mother at 14 weeks old. These animals feed on different types of herbs, plants, and fruits, in the early morning and evening. At the shoulders, the scimitar oryx is just over a meter and weighs about 200 kilograms. They are mostly white with a red-brown chest as well as black marks on the forehead and along the nose. These oryx have long parallel horns of about a 1 to 1.25 meters in both sexes.
