The blue-headed parrot, also known as Pionus menstruus, is a medium-sized parrot about 27 centimeters long. The body is mostly green, with a blue head and neck, and the red covers. It resides in South Tropical, Subtropical and South Central America, from Costa Rica, Venezuela and the Caribbean island of Trinidad, South Bolivia and Brazil.
Native to forests and semi-open country, including cultivated areas. It is largely limited to wet or sub-humid areas, but extends locally to drier habitats, at least along rivers. The blue parrot places the head from three to five white eggs in a tree cavity.
Blue-headed parrots are noisy birds and make light, high-pitched appeals. They eat fruit and seeds, sometimes cereals. Rowing collectively in palms and other trees, large numbers can be seen at paddling sites at dawn and dusk.
Blue-headed parrots are known as pets. Compared to other parrot species (such as Amazon) they are very quiet. They’re affectionate, but they’re not known for their ability to talk.
The female embraces eggs for 26 days and leaves the nest chicks about 70 days after hatching.
